Bid Book » Book1 » Political and Economic Climate and Structure » Political Parties

Due to the tremendous social and economic changes in our country during the last fifteen years, multi-political party development is rapidly progressing. Currently, the country has many parties and public associations and organizations, each of which is very distinct in terms of its structural maturity, stability, membership, regional representation and political influence. The legislation in force does not provide for existence of regional or local parties.

The role of a party within the political system of the new Russia is mainly defined by its representation in the State Duma. Parties and election blocks which fail to get the legally required number of votes to be represented in the State Duma (currently 5%) actually lose their political standing. The December 2003 elections yielded the following results:

United Russia . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .68.00%
Motherland . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .11.56%
Communist Party of the Russian Federation . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .8.44%
Liberal-Democratic Party of Russia . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .8.00%

All the parties represented in the State Duma and the Moscow City Duma whole-heartedly support Moscow’s bid to host the Games of the XXX Olympiad. Mayor of Moscow Yuri M. Luzhkov, who initiated the invitation of the Games to Moscow, and Vice-Premier of the RF Government Alexander H. Zhukov, who coordinates activities of the federal and municipal authorities with regard to the Games, are prominent figures of the United Russia party, the most powerful political organisation in Russia. No party or public association currently existing in Russia is against the move.
